Figures of Egypt
Archival Calendar
Figures of Egypt is a 2024 Calendar using a curated collection which features the work of Abbas El Sheikh. He created sculptures of public figures in 1948 which follow his style of describing their character rather than accurately representing their looks. The project was in collaboration with Rizo Masr which lead to the use of only 2 colors per page.

Research
After thorough research in collaboration with the Rare Books & Special Collections Library at The American University in Cairo, the collection was curated from Al-Musawwar Magazine, 1948. Some figures were found interesting due to their odd nature and personality which lead to the development of the Figures of Egypt Calendar.

Process
For the calendar, their names are hand lettered on each page following the style used in the magazine, and a typeface - “Farisi” – was chosen to write the months and dates to match. The images were bitmapped to support risograph printing and apply consistent style and resolution to the figures.
